Tagging Your Pet for Safety

Summary: As a pet owner, you have the risk of your pet getting lost, and that's no fun for anyone, including the pet. If you tag your pets, then in the event of a lost pet, the chances of finding your pet are greatly increased.

It's natural to become attached to your pet and in the event that your pet is lost or stolen or misplaced in any way, you'll want to find that pet as soon as possible. You can put up the traditional wanted poster or check out your pet's favorite haunts, but these may not be too effective. So how can you make your pet more secure and more findable? You can always try tagging your pet for its own safety.

Invest in an identification tag for your pet. You can have your pet's name, your address, and phone number inscribed on a tag so someone can contact you directly. If your pet ever gets lost, you stand a better chance of having her returned to you with proper ID. If you find an animal that seems lost, don't keep it while looking for the owner. Instead, take it to an animal shelter. That's the first place an owner would check for a lost pet.

You can also make a temporary identification kit for your dog to carry on vacation. All you need is a film canister with its lid. Cut two slits in it about a half an inch apart, and slide your dog's collar through it. On a small piece of paper, write your name, where you're staying temporarily, and the phone number or your cell phone number. Slip this information into the canister, and your dog will be all set for the trip.

You'll never regret tagging your pets. They won't care and it definitely improves your chances of locating your pets in the event that they run away or get lost. Lost pets are not fun and can put a damper on anyone's morale. Take preventative action and tag your pets.
