All growing up I wanted a pet. I wanted a rabbit, a hamster, a fish, and when feeling particularly ambitious, I wanted a horse or a dog. I never received any of these pets for Christmas, for my birthday, or for any other occasion. My parents just said that my grandparents' poodle would have to satiate my pet yen. Story being, I never got my pet. So, for those of you who are campaigning for a pet or for those of you on a budget, try looking for a cheap pet. So what is the cheapest pet?

So if you would like to have a pet, but you're on a limited budget, a bird makes a great choice. Caged birds, such as parakeets and canaries, don't eat much, and you can buy bird seed in bulk for very little. Hamsters are also on the cheap end and prove quite thrilling to children. With both hamsters and birds, you will need to purchase containers and a few initial supplies. After the initial investment you will be well equipped for your pet and will have a very low upkeep cost.

Another inexpensive pet is a fish. Now, the exotic fish probably are not too cheap, but your classic goldfish or other cheap fish is a great way to go. It's cheap to buy, cheap to maintain, cheap all around. The risk with the fish, however, is that the mortality rate tends to be higher than other pets, so keep that in mind. If you're looking for a cuddly pet, then the inexpensive rack is the wrong place to look because any pet that's particularly cuddly won't be too inexpensive.
