Stopping Dogs from Scratching Their Ears

Have you ever noticed when you scratch your ears, or any other body part for that matter? You probably scratch whenever you have an itch, which is the most sensible reason for scratching in the first place. Dogs are the same way with itching and scratching—if it itches, they scratch it. However, excessive scratching, as with humans, isn't so good for dogs either. If your dog is scratching its ears too much, here's what you can do.

If the ear irritation is a simple matter of a scratch or a scab, then your job is pretty easy. All you have to do in that case is sooth the irritated section so the dog has no more desire to scratch. This can be done in a couple of different ways. First you can rub some diluted vinegar around the irritated section of the ears and, if the irritation is minor enough, will succeed in soothing the hurt and speeding up its healing. You can also try various dog creams from the pet store to lessen the irritation on the ear. If the irritation is too great for over-the-counter remedies, you'll want to take your dog to the vet. Also, if the dog's ears are extremely tattered due to its incessant scratching, you'll want to take it to the doctor before you try any remedy.
