What Type of Finch Makes the Best Pet?

If you are a lover of birds and thinking about purchasing one as a pet, you may be wondering which type of bird is best for you. A Zebra finch is a small, colorful bird and is easy to care for. A Zebra finch would be a perfect pet for a new owner.

Zebra finches are very upbeat and active birds. They are very active and do not generally make noisy chirps. Finches do not easily bond to people and are generally more for watching than holding. Most birds require a lot of attention from their owners. However, Zebra finches do not and prefer to be in a cage with one or more other finches. To keep your Zebra finches happy, there are a few things to keep in mind.

  • Cage. The cage you house your finches in is a very important part of keeping your finches happy and healthy. Zebra finches are flighty birds and need as much room as possible for flight inside the cage. If you do not know how big of a cage to buy, purchase the biggest size you can.
  • Placement. Finches do not require a lot of human interaction, so a quiet place in the house would be the best place to keep your birds. Your finches will be less stressed by having quiet. Be careful as to not place them in direct sunlight or in a drafty part of the house.
  • Nutrition. A balanced diet is necessary for Zebra finches. Supply your pets with a variety of seed mix. However, do not rely on seed as the only part of your finches' diet. Fresh greens and vegetables are necessary for your finches in order to keep them healthy. Fruits are also good to feed to your finches. Try out a few different kinds of fruits and vegetables to find out what your finch likes to eat. Do not ever feed a bird avocado as it is poisonous to them.
  • Watch out for some of the dangers of keeping your pet healthy. If your finch doesn't move around much or stays puffed up a lot, this could mean that your finch is not healthy. Also, birds love toys so be sure to supply your cage with many for them to play with. There are many different types of toys. Some toys are made from wood while others are made from rope. Some birds love toys with string on them. These toys are good to have for your bird, but make sure the bird doesn't get the strings twisted around its foot or neck.
  • Zebra finches make great pets and generally live anywhere from 5 to 15 years. Keep them happy and healthy, and you will enjoy these entertaining creatures for a long time.
